Our Current Project - Amma Haven

Picture
We are currently starting a project on the coast of Ghana. While working on projects with the orphanage in the Volta Region of Ghana we realized that many of the children came from single parent mothers that could no longer provide for them. So rather than being orphans living in the orphanage they were classified as abandoned children. We decided that our next step should be to try to prevent those children from entering the orphanage in the first place. So we developed a training program to help single mothers start small businesses hoping that it will keep the families together and the children off of the street and out of the orphanages. Basically, we are helping the children by helping their mothers. We hope to roll this project out in Phases over the next 2 years.

The Issue
Poverty and hunger are the local situation for many women and children in small Ghanaian villages. Sexual exploitation has become commonplace and even accepted as a means of supporting the growing families that it is creating. Oftentimes single mothers have no choice but to trade themselves or their daughters for food to support the family. As a result teenage motherhood and HIV/AIDS are on the rise. Women need to be educated and economically empowered to break the chain of poverty for themselves, their children and future generations.

Our Model for Ghana
There is so much negative media regarding the endless monies that have gone into Africa in general, with no end in sight. What makes our project different, is that the Directors and Board are dedicated to understanding the concerns of helping third world nations and developing new methods of working with the local people. Our projects will encourage the development of critical thinking, use post secondary educated people within Ghana to implement the project and listen to Ghanaians about what it is they need. The people have to be engaged in the solution, not just have the solution delivered to them.

What is an Amma Haven?
Well, Amma is from Sanskrit roots, its meaning is mother goddess - in this context, Amma can be used in the Fante and Twi languages of Ghana. Mother Haven.
